Growing Pains - 09/96

My family and I just got back from three days in Washington, D.C. -- the politicians were all out of town, so I figured it was safe. Actually, with a couple of businesses to run and children who are older, it is increasingly difficult to get the family together for a vacation. Last week was our only chance this summer and we drove to the Capitol area to see the sights and museums. Absolutely a great experience! I could spend several columns raving about the trip, but this is supposed to be about business.

While touring the American History Museum, I was struck by the absolute ingenuity of man. The displays of products, inventions, systems, etc., is mind boggling. Basically, man finds a way to get things done and done better. I stood in awe of the amazing feats of engineering and sheer human will on display. My own efforts seemed puny and unimportant, but then I realized that, although the scale may be smaller, the underlying desire to create something good and lasting remains the same. It was a humbling, yet very inspiring, visit.

If you are having trouble believing in your own ability to succeed in your new business endeavor, a visit to the museums of the Smithsonian will give you a sense of what man can accomplish with hard work, ingenuity and a little luck.
